In the winter of 2011/12 swiss comic artist Thomas Ott flew to Hawaii with his family. On his trip over the islands he inevitably encountered Tiki statues - gods of the polynesian culture originally carved from tree trunks. Primevil and archaic, protective yet menacing they stare at you from a world long gone. The confusingly rich meaning of these old Tiki gods was overlaid by the american Tiki-hype of the 50s and 60s. However these arbitrary fictitious depictions hold the idea of ancient symbols. Soon Ott began to carve his own Tikis into scratchboard. False gods and demons took form under his knife and at some point Black Island appeared in his imagination - every paradise in the South Seas has its dark side. After 2 months Ott returned to Switzerland with a collection of over 30 drawings…
